What are Meta Tags and are they Important to Search Engines?

Meta Tags are defined as lines of HTML code embedded into web pages that are used by search engines to store information about your site. They are placed at the top of the page in the <head> area of an html document.

Here is a basic example of Meta Tags:
<meta name="description" content="This is your web page description.">
<meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, keyword3">

The description meta tag is used simply to provide the search engines with a basic summary of your page content. The summary is normally no longer than 75 characters in length. The search engines give the description meta tag a lot of importance. In search results, the description meta tag is often displayed.

The keyword meta tag simply lists a few terms relevant to that web page. In the past, search engines would index your webpages based on the keyword phrases listed in this meta tag. However, this resulted in "spammy" results and most search engines stopped using them to rank your web pages.
